A clear, top-down view of your company’s reporting lines. This template shows leadership, departments, and role ladders — so people can see who does what, who reports to whom, and where a team sits in the bigger picture. Great for onboarding, planning headcount, or sharing org changes without a wall of text.

How to create a Vertical Organizational Chart

To create a vertical organizational chart, follow these steps:

01.
Start at the top
Place your highest leadership level (Board, Chairman, CEO) at the top of the chart as the starting point.
02.
Identify reporting layers
Define the levels of your organization from executives down through management to individual contributors.
03.
List departments
Identify all major functional areas that report to leadership (e.g., Finance, Marketing, Sales, Operations, HR).
04.
Create nodes
Add boxes for each position, including the role title and person's name if you're documenting current structure.
05.
Add reporting lines
Use downward arrows to show who reports to whom, creating clear vertical connections through the hierarchy.
06.
Build out each branch
Under each department head, add their direct reports and continue down through all reporting levels.
07.
Review & share
Share the chart for onboarding, organizational planning, succession planning, or communicating structure changes.
